Mr. Gunter Altermann of Jonesboro, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday, March 8, 2019, at the age of 86. He was born May 22, 1932 in Duisburg, Germany.
Born in Germany, Mr. Altermann designed and made molds for steel mills. He began his more than 50 year career in Canada, moving through the United States with Auburn Steel. Mr. Altermann was sent to Newport, Arkansas, to evaluate Arkansas Steel. He stayed in Newport, becoming Vice President of Operations until his retirement in 2010.
A man of many interests, Mr. Guntermann was an international chess player, and a talented photographer with a love of travel.
Most importantly, Mr. Guntermann was a wonderful person. His laidback, gentle nature was often mentioned by those who loved him most.
Mr. Guntermann was preceded in death by one daughter, Marleiu Thomas; and his parents.
He is survived by four sons, Vernon Altermann and wife, Leonora, of Brooklyn, New York, Terry Altermann and wife, Wendy, of Canada, Leon Altermann of Canada, and Blake Montgomery and wife, Dawn, of Wiggins, Mississippi; two daughters, Hermina Martinez of Goose Creek, South Carolina, and Tammy Mack and husband, Billy, of Batesville, Arkansas; three brothers, Deiter Altermann, Manfred Metzger, and Reiner Metzger, all of Germany; grandchildren, Brenna Lindsey and husband, Shea, Colton Montgomery, Abby McNeil, Sam Mack, Tyler Montgomery, Ryan McNeil, Kathleen Whalon, and Clay Mack; great-grandchildren,
Jaylon Hill, Ethan Hill, and Sydnee Lindsey.
Friends may visit at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home, Friday, 12-1 p.m. Private graveside services will be held at a later time.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Jay Hill, Shea Lindsey, Billy Mack, Sam Mack, Blake Montgomery, and Tyler Montgomery.
